Will she or won't she?
Is Donna Troy slated to be killed off next year?
Here we examine the facts and possibilities concerning what is thought to be the impending demise of a much-loved character.

*******************************************

Following an announcement on Sunday 12th November 2002 concerning DC's plans for the comic releases of next year, numbers of fans have come to the conclusion that Donna Troy AKA Troia is slated to be killed off. Are these rumours warranted? All signs seem to point to yes but I'm not one to spread wild speculation, therefore here I will present the facts and allow you to come to your own conclusions.

*******************************************

Factoid One:

"DC description: When a mysterious woman from the future makes an explosive entrance at a S.T.A.R. Labs site, it results in the death of one of the founding members of the Teen Titans! Can either team carry on, knowing that they might have somehow prevented this tragedy? This miniseries leads directly into two new series: Outsiders and Teen Titans. "

The above quote was taken from the DC description concerning the event entitled 'The Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day' which occurs during next year. The event heralds the cancellation of both titles and the arrival of two new ones; 'Teen Titans' and 'Outsiders'. The two new titles is said to include an assortment of characters from the previous team books. As we know the founding members of the teen titans mentioned in the above quote are Nightwing, Arsenal, Tempest, Flash and Troia. Nightwing we can assume is safe due to his role in the new 'Outsiders' comic as the team leader, as well as the fact that he has his own title. Arsenal is also to appear as a member of this team so he is safe too. It is rumoured that Tempest will become a series regular of the recently re-launched 'Aquaman' title, so his fate also seems secure. Flash has his own title and frequent connections to the JLA, ergo safe. Troia however, is unaccounted for in any of the new titles or any others for that matter. By process of elimination it appears that it is she who will be the one to die.

Factoid Two: The Recession of Donna's Career

Over the past few years Donna has suffered at the hands of many a writer who decided her origins needed a little tweak. Gradually the constant change made Donna's history almost impossible to comprehend as she was at once amazon, titan seed, mystical twin, Wonder Girl, Troia and Darkstar. Recently this problem was settled as it seemed all writers had agreed on an affixed history for the troubled heroine. However, afterwards people seemed to lose interest and Troia was relegated to 'Wonder Woman lite' in the pages of 'Wonder Woman' and an unspeaking prescence in 'The Titans'. Without an ongoing or even miniseries of her own to speak of Donna was constantly just a supporting character, and one can only argue that this makes her that much easier to be gotten rid of.

*******************************************

Factoid Three: Evolving Cassie Sandsmark
Cassie has recently come into her own as Wonder Girl, and gained masses of her own fans. She even achieved the status of 'leader' in 'Young Justice'. It seems from the above picture that Cassie will be a member of the new 'Teen Titans' book roster, filling the 'amazon' position that Troia once filled. What is most interesting however is the costume worn by Cassie in the new book, one that appears to be a slight variation on Donna Troy's old Wonder Girl costume. Homage to a dead hero perhaps? You be the judge.

Factoid Four: Portents Of Doom?

It is a widely known fact among the comicbook community that Phil Jimenez, the last writer and artist on Wonder Woman held Donna Troy in regard as his favourite DC Heroine, or at least one of them. During his run on Wonder Woman he included Donna as a supporting character regularly, and even gave her her own backup stories. However in his last few issues he wrote some dialogue for Donna which has been interpreted as portents of her upcoming demise, and it was speculated that the dialogue was written as Jimenez' protest against Donna being killed off in the upcoming storyline. Here below is the dialogue in question, decide for yourself:

Taken from Wonder Woman #187
Angle Man has just rescued Donna from Doctor Psycho
Angle Man: 'And what would you have done without me, my lovely?'
Donna: 'Survived, I'm sure. Rhea help me, after all this...I hope so.'

Taken From wonder Woman #188
Donna has just finished explaining some photography project to Diana, who looks at her strangely.
Donna: 'Diana? You Okay?'
Diana: 'I just...(hugs her) I love you so much. I'm just so happy you're my sister, Donna. I can't imagine my life without you.'

Personally I can see where the speculations have a point. Both pieces of dialogue are completely out of sequence with the goings on around them, and perhaps overly sentimental to the point where there must be some hidden meaning.

Factoid Five: A Wonder Girl in Turmoil

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Geoff Jones and Mike McKone, the men behind the new Teen Titans title have spoken about their plans for the team members. Below are quotes taken from the interview concerning Cassie Sandsmark, both of them having added to the rife speculations already circulating. When considered with regard to the other factoids, they seem to reveal the dreaded hidden meaning of Donna's imminent death. I have underlined what appears to be the most telling words, though once again I allow you to make up your own minds...

"Wonder Girl feels the weight of her predecessor's achievements very
heavily and simply reflected this by assuming a more contemporary version of Donna Troy's costume." Mike McKone

"WONDER GIRL - Given powers by the Greek Gods, Wonder Girl learned her skills from the fabled Amazons. Cassie Sandsmark was blessed by Zeus and given the power of the Greek Gods. She's grown from an awkward girl to a competent and beautiful young woman. Coming into the Titans she'll have some issues to deal with head on, and one in particular will challenge everything she believes in. Cassie will be continuing to grow, and maybe not in a direction Wonder Woman agrees with. Cassie is a born leader, and dealing with the older Titans won't be a cakewalk." Geoff Jones

Factoid Six: For those of us STILL in denial, a word from our friend Phil Jimenez

In an interview at Dynamic Forces, Phil Jimenez has spoken about some of his upcoming projects. One in particular seems to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the dreaded fate of Donna Troy is indeed more than a rumour, but a predecided fact whose repercussions are already being developed in the comicbook world. Here lies the most indicative piece of dialogue, one that needs no deciphering, to type it bluntly:

'I'm doing a little eight-page story for Donna Troy's eulogy.'

Well, that pretty much seals the deal imho, but this page shall remain as a rumour page until I indeed witness the event for myself. For the full interview go to:
