Apple Pencil Pot

  

Materials
Dk yarn in red, green, brown and beige, 2 beads for eyes (optional), plastic or card tube (7.5cm/3in in diameter, 7.5cm/3in tall), toy stuffing, 3.50mm hook, tapestry needle.

Notes
Using a plastic tube makes the finished item washable.  I used a Robinson's squash bottle.

Leaf
Row 1:  In green ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch, 3 sc in next ch, working in unused lps along other side of ch, skip 1st ch, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch, mark as right side, turn. (12 sts)
Row 2:  Skip sc, sc in next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, slst in next sc, turn.
Rows 3 & 4:  Skip slst, sc in next 5 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, slst in next sc, turn.
Row 5:  Skip slst, sc in next 5 sc, 3 sc in next sc, mark last sc worked, sc in next 4 sc, slst in next sc, fasten off and sew in ends.

Stalk
Rnd 1:  In brown ch 2, 6 sc in 1st ch, slst to 2nd ch, mark as right side, turn.  (6 sts)
Rnd 2:  Ch 1, (4 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) twice, slst to 1st ch, turn.  (12 sts)
Rnd 3:  Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc, slst to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 4:  Ch 1, sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog 3 times, sc in next sc, slst to 1st ch, turn.  (9 sts)
Rnds 5-7:  Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.
Rnd 8:  Ch 1, sc in next 4 sc, place leaf against stalk with right sides facing and lining up marked sc on leaf with next sc on stalk, working through both pieces, sc in next 3 sc, working on stalk only, sc in next 2 sc, slst to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 9:  Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.
Rnd 10:  Ch 1, sc in next 9 sc, mark last sc worked, fasten off, sew in ends and stuff lightly.

Worm Head
If using beads for eyes, thread on yarn.  If not using beads, replace bsc with sc.
Rnd 1:  In beige ch 2, 7 sc in 1st ch, slst to 2nd ch, turn.  (7 sts)
Rnd 2:  Ch 1, sc in next sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) 3 times, slst to 1st ch, mark as right side, turn.  (10 sts)
Rnd 3:  Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, bsc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next 6 sc, slst to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 4:  Ch 1, sc in next 8 sc, slst in next sc, turn, skip slst, sc in next 2 sc, slst in next sc, turn, skip slst, sc in next 2 sc, sc in same sc as slst, sc in next sc, slst to 1st ch, turn.

Rnd 29:  Ch 1, sc in next 26 sc, line up remaining 3 sc on stalk with next 3 sc on apple, working through both layers, sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 7 sc of apple only, slst to 1st ch, turn, do not fasten off.

Insert the tube between the 2 layers of the apple, making sure that the inside of the apple lies flat against the inside of the tube.  Stuff around the outside of the tube to give the apple a nice round shape.
 
Edging:  Place the last row of both layers of the apple together matching up the stitches.  Working through both layers, sc in each sc, fasten off and sew in ends.

Your pot is now ready to fill with pencils.
